Written when Mozart was only nineteen, the enchanting music of Il re pastore (The Shepherd King) is evidence of his genius. The story is about a simple shepherd who is given his rightful place on the throne of Sidon by Alexander the Great. Romantic complications ensue but true love triumphs.
This imaginative production adds another layer of complexity and intrigue to the piece by setting it in an English country house where the guests and servants perform the opera as their weekend entertainment. For more information, read the full story and director's note or listen to the audio from the Spotlight on Opera presentation.
Praise for Il re pastore
"Go to Mozart's Il re pastore (The Shepherd King)...for the superb singing. Admire David Zinn's handsome set and Paul Palazzo's evocative lighting. Feast your eyes on Robert Perdziola's gorgeous costumes. Appreciate conductor Jean-Marie Zeitouni's spirited work in the pit with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra."
-Sarah Bryan Miller, St. Louis Post-Dispatch
"Props to director Chas Rader-Shieber for turning a frothy little lagniappe into a night of rich theater....A deliciously subtle subtext about class and destiny, plus just the right dash of humor, turn what could have been an academic exercise into a graceful evening of intelligent entertainment."
-Lew Prince, The Riverfront Times
"In this production, the company again fulfills ambitions and standards established more than three decades ago in this opera house -- to bring forth ensemble operas performed by extraordinary young American singers, in English, in a festival atmosphere."
-Robert Duffy, St. Louis Beacon
