UNPACKING THE PROCESS

There have been many meeting around Australia of concerned Music educators trying to understand the issues associated with the National Curriculum in their subject area.

The most important points to remember at this time are:

1. Music IS on the Agenda for Stage 2 of the process along with the other ART subjects.

2. Consultation for music will commence sometime
early next year.

3. Consultation will be about WHAT the content of the new curriculum will be.

4. The HOW or implementation if the curriculum is not the concern of ACARA but the individual states.

5. It is the State Government bodies we need to lobby about the place of music in the curriculum, reiterating our believe that all students across Australia should have access to a sequential, developmental music program from Kindergarten to the conclusion of their schooling.

It is also important to remember that the ACARA review is about music in the classroom. It is NOT concerned with instrumental and co-curricular programmes.

Fostering Creativity

One of the greatest advocates for the Arts and creativity at the moment is Sir Ken Robinson, advisor to governments around the globe. His book The Element is essential reading for all music educators.

Below is a link to some of his statements about the challenges for 21st Century educators and an interview with him by posted by the editor of Educational Leadership.
